Gidon Novick is our hero! He probably thinks about himself as a fairly ordinary guy who pushes himself to take on challenges at work and in his own life BUT we want to emphasize that it is the ORDINARY guy like Gidon, who does EXTRA ORDINARY things, that will change the world.
If ONE person just does ONE small thing, it can make a BIG difference.
In Gidon’s case, he did a BIG thing by pushing his body to the limit in a 3-day Xtreme adventure race but before that, he made one small decision to sign up on the Love to do Good page and start a campaign to raise funds for Kids Haven. That single decision caused a wave of support that translated into R22 600 of funds – far exceeding his original aim of R 5 000.
Here at Kids Haven we try to teach our children that GENEROSITY is a life-habit that can change the world. Do just one small thing for someone else and you can start a movement. Maybe that one small good thing is the only good thing that happens to a person all day long – YOU made that happen. Maybe that one small gesture encourages the recipient to pay it forward – now more people are feeling good. But we also know that people who haven’t felt kindness don’t know how to give kindness. Children that haven’t experienced care don’t always know how to care for someone or something. We have to teach our children at Kids Haven about generosity and ‘paying it forward’.
Thank you Gidon for making that single decision to start a campaign. Thank you to the 26 people who decided to each do one thing and support this campaign. Your wave created a R22 600 donation that we are able to use in our care programme so that 170 children can be safe and cared for at our Centre. Your wave means that we have the funds to offer programmes at Kids Haven that can teach generosity to children who may never have experienced it before. Your wave means that our children have a “pay it forward” programme which has seen us take Easter eggs to our local hospital, sing and take tea to grannies in Daveyton and many other events. Your wave means that our staff are planning their Mandela Day initiative already to fix the homes of 6 of our children whose families live in such squalid conditions, the environment prevents us from re-connecting child to family.
Thank you so much for this TIDAL WAVE of actions that arise out of a single campaign by an ‘ordinary’ man through Love to do Good.
